On face value Central Saint Martins fashion history student and up-and-coming model May Carter earns a living from making clothes look good. But it’s the clothes she chooses for herself that have caught our eye. 

Discovered via instagram in her early teens, the now 20 year old has already been lensed by legendary photographic duo Mert & Marcus, and fronted campaigns for the likes of Burberry Beauty, Diesel, Uniqlo and Jo Malone. 

Currently enjoying a Sydney sojourn, the French educated British-Zimbabwean is making the most of her momentum. Carter is at once wide-eyed and self-aware, curious about the outside world yet confident enough to stay close to herself. In Carter’s mind, her personal style is still a work in progress ~ an inside job that sees fashion as a means of self-discovery, distilling her likes and dislikes through simple trial and error. 

Intuitive and comfort-first, her low-key cotton tee and denim duos are reminiscent of 90s tomboy cool, with a sprinkling of retro irreverence thrown in for good measure (think lemon sorbet shag collars and lacy red lingerie stealing the limelight from a fresh white tank top). Much like her fresh face, the allure of Carter’s style is in its naivety ~ open, honest and just getting started.
